‘We won’t leave Tyre’, says southern Lebanon resident after losing family home

Heavy damage was reported in the southern Lebanese city of Tyre on Thursday after Israeli strikes hit the area on both Wednesday and Thursday, according to Lebanon’s state news agency NNA. The latest attacks came as Israel intensified military operations across towns and villages in southern Lebanon, following its declaration of a new stretch of the region as a “combat zone”.
The escalation comes despite a ceasefire announced by Washington on April 16, which had aimed to halt fighting between Israel and Iran‑backed Hezbollah that has raged since March 2. Israel said the strikes were part of ongoing operations in areas considered militarily sensitive.
The Israeli military has issued evacuation warnings, urging civilians to leave towns south of the Zahrani River, approximately 40 kilometres north of the Israeli‑Lebanese border. Combined with border areas already under Israeli troop control, evacuation orders issued over the past three months now cover around 2,000 square kilometres — nearly one‑fifth of Lebanon’s total land area.
